21 Years Later, This Devastating Young and the Restless Death Scene Still Breaks Fans’ Hearts
Cassie Newman’s 2005 death on ‘The Young and the Restless’ still devastates fans 21 years later. Relive the heartbreaking scene that changed Nick and Sharon forever.
While Camryn Grimes is still a large part of The Young and the Restless family and has been since she was a small child, she spent several years away from the CBS soap after her original character, Cassie Newman, died in 2005. Cassie’s death had a monumental impact on the soap, with her death scene still giving fans chills 21 years later.
Cassie Dies After a Tragic Car Crash
Teenage Cassie Newman told her mother, Sharon (Sharon Case), that she was going to a movie, but instead, she snuck into a party for older kids. When she saw that Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei), the boy she had a crush on, was drunk, Cassie decided to drive him home. The problem? Cassie didn’t have a license. Despite that technicality, Cassie got behind the wheel anyway and crashed.
Cassie suffered from a head injury, but was alarmed when she learned that Daniel would be accused of drunk driving. Cassie foolishly left the hospital to tell him that she was the one who was driving, and that was the biggest mistake she could have made. Nick brought his daughter back to the hospital, but it was too late. As her parents sat by her side, Cassie passed away.
The aftermath of Cassie’s death was profound, as it broke Sharon and Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) long and lasting marriage. In 2014, Grimes returned to the soap as Cassie’s long-lost twin, Mariah, but fans will never forget her sister and the throat-lump scene in which she died.
“Those episodes were SO good!! Crushed our soul to pieces and had us crying real sobbing ugly tears!” one fan said on X, commenting on a video of the scene.
“I remember this and I couldn’t stop crying. Nick and Sharon lives change forever that day,” another longtime Y&R fan said.
Others don’t think they will ever get over what happened to Cassie, with another X user saying, “21 years later and I’m still upset they killed off Cassie.”
The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.
