More than 40 years ago, a fictional high school senior named Ferris Bueller, played by Matthew Broderick, decided he needed a day off from school. Even now, decades after Ferris Bueller’s Day Off hit movie theaters, viewers still disagree on the true message of the film and whether it still holds up.
On June 5, 1985, Bueller roped in his pal, Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), and girlfriend Sloan Peterson (Mia Sara), to make the most of a day playing hooky. The adventures the trio had still bring laughs to longtime fans.
The movie still pops up in Reddit discussions and social media posts, with a fair amount of disagreement among viewers.
Many film buffs see Cameron as the protagonist in the movie, as he is the one who grows over the course of the day.
Cameron begins to shift from being a depressed, withdrawn teenager, emotionally neglected by his parents, into a more confident teen who feels ready to assert himself more.
“Ferris helps Cameron realize that he doesn’t have to live in constant fear and dread,” one fan on Reddit wrote.
“Cameron is the character that has an arc. He’s the one who grows and changes. Ferris is just an agent of chaos,” someone else wrote.

Some viewers of the movie simply think that Ferris was an arrogant, spoiled jerk, and suggest the movie doesn’t hold up well after all these years. Some think Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was simply a fun movie fitting of the era.
“Ferris is a sociopath…Ferris is a menace to society,” one critic suggested on Reddit.
“The movie is a nostalgia piece. If you didn’t come to it as a kid, then I can see where it’s hard to get past what is pretty problematic behavior from Ferris throughout,” suggested another fan of the movie.
More than four decades have passed since moviegoers got their first taste of Ferris Bueller. For some who have watched the movie, it’s just a fun film filled with chaos. Some others dislike the movie, feeling that the character of Ferris is more annoying than anything else.
Then, some see Ferris Bueller’s Day Off as a story about a struggling, neglected teen who begins to spread his wings after his more confident prankster friend nudges him to do so.
