50 Years Later, ‘Days of our Lives’ Fans Still Adore This Daytime Television Legend
Deidre Hall marks 50 years as Dr. Marlena Evans on ‘Days of our Lives,’ celebrating the iconic character’s legacy, romances, and enduring impact on Salem and daytime TV fans.
On June 21, 1976, Days of Our Lives fans met a brand-new heroine set to treat Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Hospital. In the half-century since, Marlena Evans has become the face of the NBC/Peacock soap and the touchstone of Salem. Played by Deidre Hall since that very first day 50 years ago, Marlena’s toughness and tenacity have endeared her to generations of fans who can’t imagine the 60-year-old soap without her.
A ‘Days of Our Lives’ Legacy and Legend
Marlena’s first Salem romance was with lawyer Don Craig (Jed Allen). They married in 1979, but their marriage was destroyed after their infant son, DJ, died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Don’s grief led him to have an affair and a few years later, he went out to mail his taxes and fans never saw him again.
In 1982, Marlena met cop Roman Brady (then played by Wayne Northrop) when he was assigned to protect her from the Salem Strangler. A few months later, the strangler appeared to kill Marlena, which prompted a live fan protest outside the DAYS studios in Burbank, per TV Insider. That moment solidified Hall’s Salem popularity. It also turned out that Marlena wasn’t killed. Jake Kositchek (Jack Coleman), the strangler, murdered Marlena’s twin sister, Samantha (played by Deidre’s twin, Andrea Hall), instead.
Roman and Marlena went on to marry the next year, but Roman’s alleged death in 1984 tore them apart. Marlena believed Roman had returned to her in 1986, but the man she thought was Roman was revealed to be John Black (Drake Hogestyn), a man who took on countless other aliases through the years. Hall and Hogestyn’s chemistry helped their popularity soar, with John and Marlena becoming two of the faces of Days of Our Lives.
“For me, she’s pretty much the heart of the show,” one fan said on Reddit. “No matter how many demon possessions or kidnappings they throw at her character, Deidre handles it all with professionalism, grace & humor (if need be).”
“Happy 50th Anniversary to @DeidreHall! Was on this day you debuted as the beloved Dr. Marlena Evans. For decades, you’ve left a lasting legacy and helped create one half of the iconic couple of John and Marlena. Wishing you more incredible years ahead, our queen,” another adoring fan wrote on X.
Others will never forget what Hall and Marlena have given their lives, with one fan writing, “Happy 50th to the Queen of daytime TV. Deidre has been on the show almost all the days of my life. She has made such an impact on my life and the lives of others. Women helping women is her motto, and she epitomizes that every day. Congrats, Queen!”
