Fans of Melissa Gilbert and Little House on the Prairie are gushing over a precious throwback video. A clip of Gilbert’s initial screen test with Michael Landon recently resurfaced online, and everybody seems to agree it is truly something special.
The throwback video was posted on the social media pages of Gilbert’s company, Modern Prairie. On Instagram, the caption noted that the video was Gilbert’s screen test with Landon that was filmed in just one take.
“The final portion was completely improvised. The warmth, the trust, and the undeniable chemistry that would become one of television’s most beloved father-daughter relationships,” the caption read.
It continued, “To this very day, that connection remains deeply meaningful to Melissa, and to all of us who continue to cherish the legacy they created together. We hope you enjoy this beautiful glimpse back to where it all began.”
Gilbert was just nine when she filmed the pilot for Little House on the Prairie. In June 2025, Gilbert talked about those early days during an appearance on the podcast, Hey Dude… The 90s Called!
She revealed that shortly before her audition, she had tried out for a part in a remake of Miracle on 34th Street. Gilbert loved the movie, but didn’t get the part and was quite sad about it.
Gilbert remembered her father telling her that something better would come along. Little did she know at the time how right he was. It was only about two weeks later that Little House on the Prairie came up.
During her podcast appearance, Gilbert also shared the advice her mom gave her about auditioning. “The only thing she ever told me was to listen. That’s all. To listen to whoever I was acting across from.” Fans can see she did just that in her screen test with Landon.

After Modern Prairie shared the iconic video on social media, Gilbert commented, “This gets me every time.”
One fan wrote, “Not for a single second in any episode does it feel like acting…What a performance, to make us forget that so completely.”
Another shared, “I’m blown away that this is a screen test. It seems like you’ve worked together for ages. Absolutely brilliant.”
On Facebook, another fan gushed, “Melissa was and still is absolutely PRECIOUS. Michael’s heart shows through every episode of the series.”
The sweet throwback came at the perfect time for Gilbert and her fans.
Gilbert is standing by the side of her husband, Timothy Busfield, as he continues to navigate challenging legal issues. In addition, she recently shared that she is not returning to Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart for Season 14, acknowledging that it wasn’t her choice.
