While Ellen DeGeneres‘ undeniable compassion and love for others would make her an amazing mother, the TV personality’s mom, Betty DeGeneres, recently opened up about why she doesn’t predict grandchildren in her future.

“Ellen has far too much class,” the former speech therapist told Us Weekly at the Human Rights Campaign 2019 Los Angeles Gala Dinner on Saturday, March 30.

Even though 88-year-old doesn’t see Ellen, 61, and her wife, Portia de Rossi, having kids, Betty has been enjoying her time with her daughter — but especially with her daughter-in-law. “She is wonderful,” the mom-of-two gushed about Portia, 46. “She has a business now. I just re-decorated my condo in December. Her art is all over the wall. It’s beautiful.”

Betty revealed that she and Ellen love to talk “on the phone a lot.” She even shared that she attends Ellen’s talks show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, every week. “That’s why she moved me,” the Louisiana native, who was once visiting the studio every single day for the first two or three seasons, dished. “She bought me a condo in Sierra Towers [Los Angeles], but that was a long trip every day back and forth. So, she bought me a house two blocks from the studio.”

Ellen  — who has been married to Portia since 2008 — hasn’t shied away from explaining why she lacks interest in becoming a mom. In 2015, the Emmy-winning star revealed that she was reluctant to start a family with her wife. “I love kids, but that’s such a big commitment,” Ellen admitted to the hosts during an appearance on the Today show at the time. “It seems long-term. It seems like a commitment that you have to stick with. And I just don’t know if I can — it’s too risky.”

The comedian jokingly added: “Like, what if I don’t like the kid? What if it turns out that it’s not as cute as I wanted or as talented? I’m gonna compare it to all these kids that I have on this show that are so smart and so funny,” she said. “And I’m like, ‘You are nowhere near these kids I had on today.'”
