Carly Simon Seemingly Disses Ex-Husband James Taylor: ‘Maybe I Never Loved You’

Carly Simon might be questioning whether she ever truly loved ex-husband James Taylor in a brutally honest new song on her latest album.

Simon, 83, will drop Comes in Waves on Friday, August 14, including the tune “Maybe I Never Loved You,” and it has fans wondering if the lyrics are referencing her marriage to Taylor, 78, even though he’s never mentioned by name.

“Maybe I never loved you / But anyway, I thought I did. I married you, we had a kid…” Simon sings at the beginning of the song, according to a report from Page Six published on Monday, August 10.

She later seemingly questions Taylor’s feelings as well, singing, “Maybe you never loved me / But anyway, I thought you did / We got married, we had a kid / Although God knows, you said you did.”

She closes the song with the line, “Maybe I always will.”

Simon and Taylor married in 1972 and divorced in 1983 after more than a decade together. They share two children – Sally, 52, and Ben, 49.

The former couple’s relationship has remained a hot topic of conversation for years. In her 2015 memoir, Boys in the Trees, the “You’re So Vain” singer wrote about their marriage and later said she still loved Taylor despite the two becoming estranged.

She’s been open about her and Taylor’s relationship in the past. “I still want to heal him, I still want to make him all right,” she told People in 2015. “And I love him so much.”

The new album is Simon’s first collection of original songs since 2008, and it comes shortly after she revealed she has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and skin cancer.

As Closer previously reported, Simon revealed the diagnosis to People in late July.

“I have not stopped living, and I have not stopped working,” she said. Working on the music gave shape to days that did not always have much shape. It gave me somewhere to go without having to leave the room. It reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life.”
