Debbie Reynolds loved Lucille Ball as a dear friend during their Hollywood heyday, but when Lucy called in the middle of the night, she knew the comedian wasn’t joking around.
“Sometimes Lucy would call me at two or three in the morning looking for him,” Debbie, now 83, writes of Lucy’s philandering hubby Desi Arnaz in her new memoir, Make ’Em Laugh: Short-Term Memories of Longtime Friends. “Why would he be here? You know I would never be with Desi,” Debbie reassured Lucy. “I know, Debbie,” Lucy replied. “But he said that he likes you. I took a chance.”

Desi isn’t the only Hollywood heel who’s kicked around in Debbie’s new book, out Nov. 10. She characterizes Bob Hope as “a notorious womanizer. Being married to his lovely wife, Dolores, for 69 years never stopped him from having affairs.” Once in Vegas, he introduced Debbie to his mistress when Dolores was mere steps away. “I was shocked,” Debbie writes.

She also relates stories of married men who made passes at her. Picking up daughter Carrie Fisher from a playdate at Buddy Hackett’s house, Debbie was accosted by the roly-poly comic.
