Calling all 9 to 5 fans! We’ve waited nearly 40 years for this, but it seems like the iconic movie may finally be getting a sequel. In a new interview, the show’s star Dolly Parton seemingly confirmed a second installment of the film with her co-stars, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, in it of course.

“My involvement is as an executive producer,” she said at the Television Critics Association biannual conference in Beverly Hills on July 25. “Right now, Dolly, Lily, and I are all intending to be in it.”

In the original flick, the actresses portrayed struggling office workers. But since the new film is happening post-#MeToo movement, the plot will be a tad different. The sequel will instead focus on three young women who deal with today’s issues by getting advice from the Consolidated Companies veterans (aka Dolly, Jane, and Lily).

'9 to 5' cast

And Jane, who has been hush-hush about a reunion for quite some time, has opened up about how the workplace is more complicated than ever today. “I’m sorry to say the situation is worse today,” she shared, adding that 9 to 5 was always ahead of its time. “Pretty much all the issues that we raised have been addressed, but not pay equity.” She added, “Today a lot of the workforce is hired by an outside company. Whom do you talk to if you have a problem?” Jane asked. “Plus with social media, the internet… you can be spied on very easily.”

That said, Jane is doing all she can to make sure the issues women face in the workplace will be addressed in the movie. “If they’re not. I’m not gonna be in it!” she confessed.

So, why has it taken so long for the highly-anticipated flick to come about? “We tried hard to get a sequel going with different writers, but the three of us never agreed on it,” Lily shared. “I was sad!”

Dolly originally teased a 9 to 5 sequel earlier this year. “All these years we’ve talked about doing a sequel to 9 to 5, but it never made any real sense,” she told Entertainment Tonight in March. “Until just recently [with] all the equal work for equal pay and all the harassment in the workplace [backlash] — we decided that we are going to try to do another one.”

'9 to 5' cast

And when she said they were going to try, she obviously meant they were really going to try. “We’re trying to get the script and all that. Everybody is very interested, and we’ve all agreed that we’d love to do it, if it’s right,” the country singer said at the time, adding that she’s also presented her with some story ideas that she likes. “They presented to me an idea the other day and I said, ‘Yes.’ This new idea [is] going to bring some new girls in… and they’re gonna find us, the old characters. We’ve all come up with a business of our own. So, they come to find us just to get some input.”

Fans went crazy after the girls got together onstage at the 2017 Emmys in September. “I have been waiting for a 9 to 5 reunion since we did the movie,” Dolly shouted to the crowd. So have we, Dolly! While at the SAG Awards with Lily in 2017 she joked, “People have wanted another 9 to 5, but I think we’d have to call it 95.” We don’t care what they call it, we just want it now!
