It’s been two years since Drew Barrymore split from husband Will Kopelman, and she’s still adjusting to life as a single parent, as she recently revealed in an Instagram post.
“As I go through these struggles as a woman and a mother, I have the fortune of knowing she is safe, and happy, and loved,” she wrote of daughter Olive, 5. “I say to Will Kopelman thank you for always being the best dad, and supporting, and enabling me to do what I need and want to do. I know that’s not everyone’s situation. And I never take it for granted. I never had family growing up.” The duo is also parents to a three-year-old daughter, Olive.

But things haven’t always been easy for Drew. The 50 First Dates star previously confessed that at first, she was in a “very dark and fearful place” following her split from Will. “I was not looking for a job. I had actually stopped acting for several years because I wanted to raise my daughters. But then a shift happened in my life and I was separating from their father and it was just a very difficult time,” she said.
Drew added, “I definitely personally was in a very dark and fearful place and then this script came along and I was like, ‘Yeah I don’t think this is a good time’ and ironically, I think it taught me a valuable life lesson.” She added, “Sometimes when you think something is the worst timing and the worst idea, it can actually become the thing that saves you and pulls you out and gives you a new focus, and empowerment, and switches your constant stuck way of thinking and feeling and [puts] it into something else that might actually get you to a healthier place faster.”
The 43-year-old famously grew up fast as the child star of E.T. and battled addiction as a teenager. Now, “I love my family and everyone in it, because they form these little girls, too,” she says. “That’s a support system I cherish every day of my life.”
