We get it! Seeing your loved one’s life portrayed on the big screen can be a little uneasy, especially when you’re the one producing it. Oh, and your spouse is the Elton John.

In a new interview, David Furnish admits it wasn’t easy for him to sit down and watch his husband’s new biopic Rocketman with Elton sitting right next to him. “I was terrified — it was an awesome responsibility,” he revealed to Page Six. “When I sat next to him … it was without question the most anxious [moment] of my life.”

However, once they finally got through the movie and the credits started to roll, David admits seeing John’s reaction made him feel like he did a good job. “He was so profoundly moved emotionally, I thought maybe we should not have done it,” David said. “He was sobbing, he was wailing … There was no reading in between the lines — it poured out of him.”

On Friday, May 31, Rocketman premiered in the U.S. and, even though Elton already knew what the movie was going to be about, he couldn’t stop himself from shedding a few tears in the theater.

“I was in the cinema for about 15 minutes before I started crying,” he recalled to The Guardian. “Not crying as in the occasional tear quietly trickling down my cheek: really sobbing, in that loud, unguarded, emotionally destroyed way that makes people turn around and look at you with alarmed expressions.”

“I wasn’t prepared for the power of what I was seeing,” he continued. “The whole experience of watching someone else pretend to be you on screen, of seeing things you remember happening again in front of your eyes, is a very weird, disconcerting one, like having an incredibly vivid dream.”

In the film, Elton is portrayed by Kingsman: The Golden Circle actor Taron Egerton. With many lauding his performance, perhaps Taron will snag an Oscar next year!
