If you thought that Elton John stays in character everywhere he goes, you would be incorrect, as the legendary hitmaker recently revealed that he never brings his stage persona home with him.

Speaking to Us Weekly and other reporters, the 71-year-old, who shares 8-year-old Zachary and 6-year-old Elijah with his husband, David Furnish, said, “They know that daddy is famous but … when we are out in the summer and people are taking our photograph or asking for a photograph, they say, ‘Why do they want your photograph?’” the singer said while at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party. He continued, “And we always say, ‘Because people like my music.’ They know what daddy does, but I never bring Elton home. I try to leave Elton on the stage.”

The musician added, “They’re quite grounded, as far as that goes. They love their daddy’s music, but they also like a lot of other people’s music.” Elton did say that his two son have only watched him perform once in New York, but he does still plan to “take a breather” after his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour ends.

“By the time I finish [the tour] I’ll be at least 75, and that will be a chance to reassess what I want to do,” the Grammy winner explained. “I’d like to make more records, I’d like to write more musicals, but I would like to spend more time with my children and David.” He added, “I just owe it to these children to be there for them.”

Although Elton should expect to find himself explaining to his kids why everyone is rushing to see a movie about him, and that’s mainly because the icon’s rise to fame will be showcased in a film titled Rocketman, scheduled to be released on May 31, 2019. In fact, Elton, and the actor who will be playing him, Taron Egerton, recently performed a duet of “Tiny Dancer” ahead of the release!
