More than 55 years after Elton John‘s first major hit, “Your Song,” many fans say his music feels even more meaningful to them now than it did decades ago. Songs they once danced to as teenagers now remind them of old romances, lost loved ones, and pivotal moments in their lives.

Part of what has made John’s catalog of music become so iconic all these years later is the emotional range of his work. From heartbreak ballads to joyful songs that make you want to dance, fans say different tunes seem to resonate more during different chapters of their lives.

In reflecting on which of John’s many songs is a favorite, one fan on Facebook admitted they couldn’t pick just one. “There are many, but Rocket Man’s opening notes bring me back to a time in my life I love to remember,” they wrote.

Someone else on Facebook gushed over John, noting he’s been her favorite since she was 14. She added, “My husband took me to one of your concerts when I was 6 months pregnant. I was so excited I thought I’d give birth.”

“I fell in love with him while dancing to “Crocodile Rock” when I was about 13 years old at our local youth club, and I am now 67 and my love has never faltered,” read another Facebook fan’s comment.

That same fan continued that their love for John has been “The longest love affair of my life and long may it continue.”

More than five decades after becoming a global star, John’s music continues to be the soundtrack to people’s lives. For many fans, the songs they loved as teenagers have only become more meaningful with time. The beloved musician’s iconic tunes bring listeners comfort and spark memories of moments they will never forget.
