It’s been 10 years since John Travolta and Kelly Preston‘s eldest child, Jett Travolta, tragically died and, in a new interview, the 64-year-old actor confessed he “didn’t know” if he’d make it after losing his son and revealed how much the Church of Scientology helped him get through that tough time.

“It’s the worst thing that’s ever happened in my life,” John told Us Weekly. “The truth is, I didn’t know if I was going to make it.” Jett sadly died at age 16 in January 2009 after suffering a seizure while the Travoltas were vacationing in the Bahamas. Though the Grease star and his wife, Kelly, 56, leaned on each other following their son’s passing, John admitted the Church of Scientology also greatly helped his family heal.

“The church never left our sides for two years,” John revealed. “I don’t know if I would have made it through without their support. Our church is the number one thing that keeps us grounded.”

Today, the doting parents try to raise their two kids, daughter Ella Travolta, 18, and son Benjamin Travolta, 8, to be the best versions of themselves that they can be. John also told Us Weekly that his kids make life worth living. “Their future is very important to us,” he gushed. “Our children keep our interest in life very high.”

Though John recently shared an Instagram photo of himself with his teenage daughter with his many fans, the actor has said in the past that he’s staying out of her dating life as she grows older. “I don’t interfere with that,” he told Ellen DeGeneres during a 2016 appearance on her show. “And you know, I’m saving her because she has two guys that she hangs out with. I don’t ask anything about what they say or do with each other.” John and Kelly seem like the best parents!
