Kathy Bates Reveals 60-Pound Weight Loss — Find Out How She Did It!
What a transformation! Even though Kathy Bates has spent years playing different characters, she has taken some time to focus on the one person that matters most: herself. The 70-year-old recently spoke to Us Weekly about not only losing close to 60 pounds, but what it took to shed all that weight.
“Mindfulness, just knowing when to push my plate away,” the actress told the outlet while at WebMD’s Health Heroes event in New York City on Tuesday, January 15. “My niece told me this little secret, I guess it’s no secret, it’s a biological thing, that at some point when you’re eating, you have this involuntary sigh and that’s really your brain and your stomach communicating that you’ve had enough,” the Oscar winner continued, adding, “The trick is to pay attention to that and push your plate away.”
Kathy said that while she avoided typical guilty pleasures like soft drinks and junk food, her whole method wasn’t very easy to do off-the-bat. “It took a few years,” the American Horror Story alum admitted. “I would say you have to be really patient … I don’t like the word willpower, but I like the word determination.” She added, “I have never been in such good health. I just had a physical. I’m doing great … I feel like a completely different person. I can move, I can walk. I just wish I had done it years ago.”
It’s great to hear that Kathy, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 and underwent a double mastectomy in 2012, feels as good as she’s ever felt before. Late last year, the On the Basis of Sex co-star talked about what it was like dealing with the disease. “I remember shaking for hours that day,” she recalled. “I withdrew and didn’t do anything — jobs, social events or anything else.” Although the ordeal gave Kathy a new perspective. “I’ve become less of a hermit, and I travel more,” she said. “I really enjoy every moment of my life now.”
