Fans of Law & Order: SVU will meet a new cast member during the Season 28 premiere. According to Deadline on August 27, Succession alum J. Smith-Cameron is joining the cast. Her character will appear throughout Season 28 on a recurring basis.

The media outlet notes that Smith-Cameron will play a jury consultant named Gwen Sharpe. Many fans love her from her days playing Gerri Kellman on Succession. She appeared in nearly 40 episodes, including the pilot of the series, continuing through Season 4.

Fans of Law & Order: SVU were quick to celebrate the casting news in the show’s subreddit.

One wrote, “Wow! Gerri from Succession (and many other accolades). She’s a strong actress and I’m looking forward to it!”

Another added, “Oooh this could be good!”

Someone else raved, “My 2 favorite show worlds are colliding.”

As one Law & Order fan noted, and as her IMDb page indicates, Smith-Cameron has previously appeared in several other individual episodes within the franchise, including a Season 13 episode of SVU.

In addition to her guest role in the SVU episode titled “Educated Guess,” she also popped up in a handful of episodes of the original series, as well as a couple of appearances on Criminal Intent.

Smith-Cameron made her acting debut in 1984 on the soap opera Guiding Light, where she played Nancy Ferris. She has had roles on dozens of different projects since then, including appearances on Hacks, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, Rectify, and True Blood.

Some fans of Law & Order: SVU expressed their hope that Smith-Cameron would join the show as a villain, perhaps one sticking around long enough to also get a redemption arc. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound as if that is the case.

However, the news of Smith-Cameron’s casting has people excited, and they will not have to wait very long to check her out in her new role.

Season 28 of Law & Order: SVU premieres on NBC on Thursday, October 8 at 9 p.m. Eastern/8 p.m. Central.
