Former Little House on the Prairie and When Calls the Heart star Melissa Gilbert took to social media to share a heartfelt farewell. After nearly a decade, Gilbert decided it was time to move on.
In an Instagram post shared on June 23, Gilbert revealed she had packed up the one-bedroom apartment she had been renting on the Upper West Side in New York City. She noted it had been the “perfect” apartment and wrote, “The last eight years here have been so special.”
The photos and video that Gilbert included in her post showed packed moving boxes scattered throughout the apartment.
Gilbert wrote about her love for the area and referenced many experiences she had embraced by living in the apartment over the past eight years. “This city truly has a pulse. You can feel it in your heart,” she noted. “A very fond ‘farewell and see you soon’ to our favorite city in the world,” Gilbert added.
“I promise we’ll be back it’s just that right now….well…you know,” she cryptically shared.
She also wrote, “Excited to live in our wonderful home upstate full time for a good long while.”
What went unsaid in Gilbert’s caption was the reason for the move. Her “you know” seemed to be a reference to the legal troubles her husband, Timothy Busfield, has been facing in recent months.

In January, as TMZ shared, Busfield was arrested in New Mexico amid allegations he had inappropriately touched two young boys who were a part of the cast of the Fox series The Cleaning Lady. Busfield was a director and executive producer for the show.
Both Gilbert and Busfield have maintained his innocence. According to Entertainment Weekly, Busfield is slated to appear in court in New Mexico on June 30 for a status hearing. Currently, his trial is scheduled to begin in May 2027.
The couple has had a home in upstate New York since January 2019 and has put a lot of work into renovating the 14-acre property.
Given the current financial and legal challenges that Busfield is navigating, it seems the pair thought that letting go of the New York City apartment and spending their time at their more remote property was the best choice for now.
