Mariska Hargitay Was on These Hit Shows Before She Became Olivia Benson
Mariska Hargitay had nearly 40 roles before ‘Law and Order: SVU,’ and fans may not remember some of the earliest gigs she landed.
Years before she became Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU and hosted the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, Mariska Hargitay appeared in almost 40 other roles. Fans may remember some of Hargitay’s previous gigs, but chances are, some of them will come as a surprise to the Law & Order star’s biggest fans.
According to her IMDb page, Hargitay’s first acting credit came via the 1984 movie Ghoulies. She played Donna, a friend to the movie’s central character, Jonathan (Peter Liapis).
Also in 1984, Hargitay starred in the Ronnie Milsap video for his song “She Loves My Car.” The video for the Milsap hit was one of the earliest country songs featured on MTV, according to the singer’s website.
In 1988, Hargitay joined the iconic nighttime soap opera Falcon Crest, where she played Carly Fixx. She was the half-sister of central character Dan Fixx and a member of the Gioberti family, a younger and rebellious addition to the show’s central family. Carly was included in 15 episodes of Falcon Crest.
Entertainment Weekly shared that Hargitay appeared in one episode of Baywatch during the legendary show’s first season in 1989. Her appearance came in episode 4, which was titled “Second Wave,” and she played Lisa Peters. Lisa was the girlfriend of private club lifeguard Trevor Cole (Peter Phelps), and the rich daughter of Mr. Peters, Trevor’s boss.
A brief appearance on Seinfeld came for Hargitay during the 1993 episode titled “The Pilot.” She played Melissa Shannon, who auditioned for the sitcom that Jerry Seinfeld and George Costanza (Jason Alexander) were developing.
During the fourth season of ER, which aired from 1997 to 1998, Hargitay played a desk clerk at Cook County General Hospital named Cynthia Hooper. She appeared in 13 episodes, and her character had a romantic relationship with Dr. Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards).
In June, Hargitay appeared on the I Am an Actor podcast and talked about her time on ER. She said she essentially manifested her role within the Law & Order franchise.
After having a role on ER, Hargitay wasn’t sure what would top it. During the podcast, she explained, “I remember going, ‘Law and Order. That’s a really good show. It’s so solid.'”
Hargitay decided she wanted to be on Law & Order and “just put it out there.” Not long after, she landed the iconic role she still plays today.
