Singer Patti LaBelle has a word of advice for the up-and-coming female singers in the music industry! When the 74-year-old music icon recently appeared on Busy Philipps’ new show, Busy Tonight, she said that too many young women feel the need to show off their bodies to sell their music — but Patty doesn’t agree!

“I hate saying this but keep your clothes on,” she told Busy. “That’s all. You know that talent will show if it’s within.” The “If You Only Knew” singer then motioned towards her chest and thighs and said, “You don’t have to do this and do that to show that, so I talk to a lot of young girls, too.”

Patti revealed that she’s been a mentor to a lot of A-list singers in the business like “Beyoncé and Mary J. [Blige]” and she continues to educate many more young women today. “Yeah, I’ve been mentors to so many,” she explained, before revealing that she probably gives the most advice to her goddaughter Mariah Carey.

“I didn’t know that,” Busy told the star after Patti revealed Mariah is her godchild. “For many years,” Patti responded. “I have to slap her every now and then. But she’s so phenomenal, so good, she doesn’t need to be slapped anymore. That’s my baby!”

After learning all of the ins-and-outs of the entertainment industry, Patti felt the need to be a mentor to anyone who seeks her advice. “I talk to all of these young ladies because they’re young ladies and that’s my job,” she explained. Patti knows that if she can at least help one young woman learn to sell her music without flaunting her body, then she’s done her job.

The only people who can probably test Patti and get away with it are her young granddaughters Gia and Laila. “Any day that they come to my house, they take my jewelry, they play with everything, they break things, and I thought that I would have a fit. I don’t mind!” she hilariously said during a previous interview with People. “I let the kids get away with things that I would never let anybody get away with!”
