Rosie O’Donnell Returns to Broadway After 21 Years, Joining ‘ The Rocky Horror Show’

Rosie O’Donnell has had a pretty exciting summer. The actress and comedian temporarily moved back to the U.S. from Ireland, took over hosting duties for a week on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, starred in her own one-woman Off-Broadway production (Common Knowledge), and now she’s headed to Broadway.

The 64-year-old shared an Instagram post early on Wednesday morning, revealing that she will costar as the Narrator in Roundabout Theater Company’s production of The Rocky Horror Show for two weeks, from October 6 through October 18.

O’Donnell replaces Rachel Dratch while the former SNL actress is out on leave. Dratch will return to the role on October 20.

What is The Rocky Horror Show, and is it just like the film? The iconic movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which starred the late Tim Curry, was based on this 1972 Richard O’Brien musical. Curry also originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1973 stage production. Over 50 years later, legendary songs such as “Time Warp” are still delighting fans.

The newly named Narrator’s Instagram announcement of her return to Broadway was met with pure glee. “Booking tickets NOW!” wrote one fan as others gushed, “Right where she belongs. Back on Broadway”, “I need to go”, Officially gobsmacked. Most exciting news ever”, “A star is born again, and again, and again,” and “I’ve literally adored you my entire life. I’m so excited about this and so happy for you!”

Of course, as her fans point out, this isn’t exactly O’Donnell’s first time on a Broadway stage. The actress also starred in Grease (1994), Seussical (2001), and Fiddler on the Roof (2004-2005).
