‘Sex And The City’ Writers Planned To Kill Off Mr. Big In The Third Movie (Stay Calm, People!)

Honestly, we were far from prepared to hear this news. Several members of the Sex and the City cast — including Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Chris Noth — as well as show writer Michael Patrick King recently sat down with journalist James Andrew Miller for the latest installment of his Origins podcast and spilled the beans on a shocking plot detail from the yet-to-be-made Sex and the City 3 movie script.

During the chat, host Miller casually revealed that writers planned to base the third film around Mr. Big’s (aka Chris Noth) sudden death and how protagonist Carrie Bradshaw (aka Sarah Jessica Parker) dealt with the loss of her husband. And that plot plan is, apparently, the very reason why Kim Cattrall (aka Samantha Jones) has no desire to be a part of another SATC movie.

“People close to Kim believe the script for the movie didn’t have a lot to offer the character of Samantha,” Miller said in the podcast. “They point to the fact that it calls for Mr. Big to die of a heart attack in the shower, relatively early on in the film, making the remainder of the movie more about how Carrie recovers from Big’s death than about the relationship between the four women.”

The podcast interview also revealed that Chris hated “the cornball s—t” that the Sex and the City movies brought to the big screen. “I really hate corny stuff and it could be because I’m a little bit of a cynic. Like, the whole thing at the end of the movie in the shoe closet, hated it,” the actor said, referring to the moment when his character proposes to Carrie in the final scene of 2008’s first SATC film.

“Hated the thing at the end of the movie after I felt she deceived me and then I say, ‘Well, it’s time I give you a bigger diamond ring.’ Hated it… I thought it was just really sentimental and overly romantic without any feet in realism,” Chris added.

Though the third Sex and the City film script has seemingly been completed, the cast is still unsure if the project will ever come to fruition due to Kim’s desire to put characters Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte York Goldenblatt, and Miranda Hobbes in the past and her because of her reported feud with the other cast members.

“Kristin, Cynthia, and Sarah Jessica became one group, and Kim never joined mentally. Kim fought and said, ‘I’m everyone’s favorite’… [Sarah Jessica’s] name was contractually, legally, righteously, the only name on the poster due to the fact that she was a movie star in 1998 when the series started and she did a leap to do a show about sex on [HBO], the channel that did the fights, and it doesn’t matter how popular you are. I guess for Kim it didn’t matter how much the raise became if there was never parity, but there was never going to be parity,” show creator King explained.

Sarah Jessica then chimed in to explain she personally has no ill-will against Kim. “I’m not in a catfight with anybody, I’ve never publicly ever said anything unfriendly, unappreciative about Kim because that’s not how I feel about her,” she said, adding that she “just couldn’t have functioned” if there indeed was that much drama on-set.

Kristin then offered, “It’s tough when you’ve worked with someone for 20 years. You want to have respect and I have respect… it’s very hard because we were crushed by not doing that third film. It’s so hard to get a film starring four women greenlit, even when you are a household name around the world.” We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the third SATC flick will still make it to theaters — but just please don’t kill off Big!
