The ‘General Hospital’ Favorite With an Incredible 1960s Music Legacy
James Patrick Stuart, who plays Valentin Cassadine on ‘General Hospital,’ inherited musical talent from his parents, Chad Stuart of Chad and Jeremy and former Mamas and Papas singer Jill Gibson Stuart.
General Hospital fans know that Valentin Cassadine is a man of many talents. He can cook up coq au vin in an instant or tickle the ivories while belting out Billy Joel on the fly. What some fans may not know is that actor James Patrick Stuart has musical talent by birthright, as his parents come from the 1960s rock-and-roll world.
Stuart’s father was Chad Stuart of the British pop duo Chad and Jeremy, while his mother is Jill Gibson Stuart, who briefly sang with the Mamas and the Papas. Stuart’s family legacy led to him growing up in the entertainment world, with him landing one of his first big roles when he was only 11 years old as Dr. Zee on the sci-fi series Galactica 1980, according to IMDb.
By the end of the decade, Stuart had joined the soap opera world as Will Cortlandt on All My Children. In 1991, he reflected on a life in showbiz that had only just begun for some, but had been a part of Stuart’s world for years.
“My friends were mostly grown-ups, so [maybe] I learned a bit too quickly,” Stuart told Soap Opera Digest at the time. “I was always raised in a studio or on a photo shoot. We moved around a lot because my father was in show business. The conventional way of looking at it would be, ‘Oh, that poor kid was robbed of his childhood.’ That’s not true at all. It was incredibly conducive to my becoming an artist, an actor, a musician.”
Stuart had a close relationship with his parents, and when his father, Chad, died of non-COVID-related pneumonia in 2020, the GH star posted a poem to remember him: “12/20/20 Higgledy piggledy hi-de-ho Miss you, kiss you daddy-o… Wish you’d stuck around a bit. But you were sick and had to split. Just know that I could not be sad. When I’m this grateful, you were my dad. Love you, Chad Stuart.”
In 2024, Stuart revealed that his mother was living in England, where he was partly raised after moving there with his father in his teens. He shared a photo revealing his love for his mother, who replaced Michelle Phillips as a Mamas and the Papas singer for a few short months in 1966, per Record Collector Magazine.
“This lovely woman who looks like my sister is my mom visiting from England,” he tweeted. “I got show her a few of the prettiest parts of my new home state of Oregon.”
As for Stuart, he is also a musician, and not just when Valentin finds a keyboard. In 2019, he released his first studio album as a gift to his father, per She Knows Soaps, with the other half of Chad and Jeremy, Jeremy Clyde, lending his vocal talents to multiple songs.
