The Jason Morgan Moment That Changed ‘General Hospital’ Forever

General Hospital’s Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) wasn’t always Jason Morgan. He was born Jason Quartermaine and sometimes fans think there is still some Jason Quartermaine left in him. However, 30 years ago, Jason Quartermaine became Jason Morgan in a storyline that still resonates today, perhaps more than ever before.

Jason Quartermaine Gets in the Car

It was New Year’s Eve in 1995 when a fight broke out in the Quartermaine living room, with a drunk AJ Quartermaine (Sean Kanan) getting behind the wheel. His younger brother, pre-med student Jason, tried to stop him and got in the passenger seat. That fateful moment changed everything for both General Hospital and the Quartermaine clan. AJ ran the car into a tree and walked away unscathed. However, Jason ended up unconscious with a brain injury.

When Jason woke, he was a new man in almost every way. He had no memory of who he was before, but this was not a simple soap opera amnesia case. Instead, Jason was said to be brain-damaged. He didn’t just have complete memory loss; he was a new person. Jason felt detached from everything and everyone and had to re-learn basic human emotions. He was a blank slate who wanted a new name, so he became Jason Morgan, taking his grandmother’s maiden name as his last name.

Blank Slate Jason Becomes Someone New

Soon after adopting a whole new identity, Jason rejected the Quartermaines and became mobster Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) right-hand man, hitman, and enforcer. Throughout the years, Jason learned how to love, as well as how to be a parent and a son. His romances with Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough), Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst), and Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) were legendary, but in 2025, Jason finally returned to his roots.

He moved back into the Quartermaine home, forging a close relationship with his mother, Monica (Leslie Charleson), and his Aunt Tracy (Jane Elliot). When Monica passed away at the end of the year, Jason was the one who found her and gave the eulogy at her funeral. Fans even began to call him Jason Quartermorgan.

Currently, Jason is in an international prison after taking the fall for a shooting he didn’t commit, while actor Steve Burton takes a GH break. According to his podcast, That’s Awesome, Burton is expected back this summer as Jason’s story continues, a story that started three decades ago when Jason Morgan was born.
