More than 50 years ago, one unexpected moment on All in the Family left audiences stunned. The move that broke all the rules of network television at the time generated an epic audience reaction that had everybody laughing harder than almost any other sitcom scene ever managed. When Sammy Davis Jr. unexpectedly kissed Archie Bunker on the cheek, television viewers saw something they had never quite seen before.
In “Sammy’s Visit,” Bunker, played by Carroll O’Connor, happened to be driving his cab during his moonlighting gig. He ended up having Davis, playing himself, as a passenger. After Davis left his briefcase in the cab, he connected with Bunker to retrieve it from his home.
The visit from Davis created quite a stir in the neighborhood, with everybody showing up to meet the entertainer. It created a stir among viewers, too. At the end of the visit, Davis requested a photo with Bunker and surprised him with a kiss on the cheek.
The audience found it hilarious, and the scene prompted what was said to be the longest genuine laughter from a sitcom for decades. The audience laughed, but the undercurrent of the storyline was much more serious.
All in the Family was a huge show in those days, and Bunker was written as someone who was openly prejudiced and often uncomfortable around social change. Due to those factors, the kiss landed differently. Davis turning the tables on him with humor made the scene funny, but it also quietly challenged racial attitudes of the time.

Having Davis on the series was notable on its own, and when the surprise kiss is factored in, the taboo moment stood out from the show’s typical episodes.
One All in the Family fan on Facebook declared that “Sammy’s Visit” was “The most hilarious 30 minutes in television history!!!”
Another wrote, “Truly the funniest sitcom episode ever! Even after 54 years, you can watch it and find yourself laughing out loud.”
Someone on Reddit recalled watching the episode with their family years ago. “I was literally rolling on the floor when this happened. My father, who hardly ever laughed at anything, laughed out loud. The whole family busted a gut!”
More than five decades later, “Sammy’s Visit” remains one of television’s most unforgettable sitcom episodes. Fans still laugh at the surprise kiss, but many also see it as a reminder of how All in the Family used humor to push conversations other shows avoided.
