Tom Hanks Surprises Fans With An Early Christmas Visit To In-N-Out Burger
He may be known for his comedic and dramatic roles, but Tom Hanks is also credited with being a stand-up guy. And he just proved his reputation to be true after he showed up to an In-N-Out Burger in Fontana, CA on Friday, Dec. 21. According to a Facebook video posted by fan Renee Chavez, The Polar Express actor even bought lunch for several customers waiting in the drive-thru!
The 62-year-old was supposedly dining with his wife, Rita Wilson, at the time that he was spotted buying lunches and meeting fans. “Tom signed In-N-Out hats and took pictures with everyone,” a fan named Meghan told E! News. “He was genuinely nice, laughing, talking with everyone, and taking selfies! He wished us a Merry Christmas on his way out.” So cool!
Tom and Rita’s visit to Fontana came as a shock to fans considering the town lies 50 miles east of bustling LA. While it is en route to popular vacation spots such as Joshua Tree National Park and Palm Springs, residents are quick to say that the town isn’t often frequented by A-list celebs such as Tom.
“Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, made a surprise stop in Fontana on Friday,” read a message posted on the city’s Facebook page. “Welcome to Fontana @tomhanks! Please visit us again.”
This isn’t the first time that the Oscar-winning actor has done something out of the ordinary. In 2013, Tom met one of his biggest fans Sarah Moretti. The woman, who has autism, spent years collecting pictures and magazine cuttings. She put the items together and created a huge scrapbook which ended up being hand-delivered to Tom when she met him backstage at his Broadway show Lucky Guy.
Not only did Tom take the time to go through the entire scrapbook, but he was also mesmerized by it. “Sarah, this is so great. You know, even my mom doesn’t have something like this,” the Captain Phillips actor said, according to a YouTube video shared by Rita Abraham.
If you thought that was heartwarming, listen to this. In Oct. 2014, a NYC cab driver was featured in the Humans of New York project. The cabbie told the story of the time when Tom got into his cab, according to a video shared by Entertainment Tonight. “I look him in the eye, and I scream: ‘WIIIIIIILLLSSSSSOOOOOOON!!!’” he said. “And that really got him. He started laughing hard. He sees that I’ve got this Ferrari hat on, and a Ferrari shirt too, so he starts calling me ‘Mr. Ferrari.‘ The whole ride, he keeps calling me ‘Mr. Ferrari.'”
The story gets crazier. As the weeks passed following the friendly encounter, “Mr. Ferrari” would pick up people who knew or worked with Tom. After asking for them to send his warm wishes, the cabbie got an unlikely text. “One day I’m driving, and I get a text from one of the people that I’d driven, and it says ‘Mr. Hanks wants to invite you to see his Broadway show.'” The driver ended up going to Tom’s show where the two took a picture together backstage. Way to go, Tom!
