Beloved country singer Alan Jackson is preparing to step away from touring after years of quietly managing a degenerative neurological condition that has made performing increasingly difficult for him. Fans have continued to rally around Jackson, with many wondering what happened to the iconic country singer.
In 2021, Jackson appeared on Today and acknowledged, “I know I’m stumbling around on stage.”
Jackson revealed he was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) in 2011 and acknowledged the condition has become difficult to hide. He explained, “There’s no cure for it, but it’s been affecting me for years. And it’s getting more and more obvious.”
He added, “I’m having a little trouble balancing, even in front of the microphone, and so I just feel very uncomfortable.”
The condition affects balance and movement, helping explain why fans have noticed Jackson struggling more on stage in recent years.
Because Jackson has been performing for years while managing the condition, many fans have only recently realized why his movements on stage have changed.
“Ugly crying with the realization that I’ll never see him perform live,” one fan commented after Jackson announced he was stepping away from touring.

In May 2025, Jackson told the crowd at his show in Milwaukee that his career had been the “American Dream.” He acknowledged that fans likely knew he had been “kinda winding down” his career, and then he surprised everybody with an announcement.
He revealed that the show in Milwaukee would be his last concert on the road. Jackson added that he would do one last show in a place close to his heart, where his career began.
The country singer explained, “We just felt like we had to end it all where it all started, and that’s in Nashville, Tennessee — Music City — where country music was born and lives. I gotta do the last one there.”
As he took in the cheers from the crowd at that performance, Jackson thanked his fans and admitted they were going to make him tear up. “Maybe I’ll see you all again one day. God bless you now,” he said before walking off the stage for the last time on the road.
Jackson’s last “big finale show” is slated to take place in Nashville on June 27. According to the singer’s website, tickets for Jackson’s last concert sold out almost immediately during the pre-sale.
He may be stepping away from touring, but fans are still hoping Jackson’s Nashville finale won’t be the last time they hear from one of country music’s most beloved voices.
