He’s back home! Fans were worried after Arnold Schwarzenegger was rushed into emergency open heart surgery last week, but thankfully the actor is recovering well and he was finally able to go back home. The Terminator star was discharged from Cedars-Sinai hospital in LA on Friday, April 6.

“He’s excited to get home and feels great,” a source revealed to Us Weekly. The former governor of California had originally gone in to have a planned pulmonic valve replacement procedure last week and it was his second time having the procedure. He first underwent heart surgery in 1997 for a congenital heart defect, and his spokesperson Daniel Ketchell explained why Arnold had to get the valve replaced.

“That 1997 replacement valve was never meant to be permanent, and has outlived its life expectancy, so he chose to replace it yesterday through a less-invasive catheter valve replacement,” Daniel revealed to the Washington Post. He said that the hospital’s open-heart surgery team was on hand during the procedure in case any complications arose, which it did and that’s why the less-invasive replacement procdure quickly turned into an open heart surgery procedure.

“They frequently are in these circumstances, in case the catheter procedure was unable to be performed. Governor Schwarzenegger’s pulmonic valve was successfully replaced,” Daniel continued.

Shortly after undergoing open heart surgery, Arnold took to Twitter to release a statement where he gave fans an update on his health and thanked them for their support. “It’s true: I’m back!” the 70-year-old wrote. “I went to sleep expecting to wake up with a small incision and woke up with a big one — but guess what? I woke up, and that’s something to be thankful for. Thank you to the doctors [and] nurses. And I’m truly filled with gratitude for all of the kind messages.”
