Bob Newhart Reacts to Close Friend Tim Conway’s Death: ‘We Lost One of the Greatest’

A wave of sadness took over Hollywood after news broke that The Carol Burnett Show star Tim Conway sadly passed away at 85 on Tuesday, May 14. In the wake of the heartbreaking news,  the beloved actor’s closest friends and former colleagues have been opening about up him. Most recently, Bob Newhart took to Twitter to share his sentiments regarding his good friend’s death.

“We lost one of the greatest today — Tim Conway may be the greatest ever!” gushed the 89-year-old, who starred alongside the late actor in 1982’s Dick and Tim. “I will never forget on an Emmy Awards when Harvey Korman won and Tim did not. Harvey went up to accept his award, Tim went up and stood right next to him, not saying a word. Ginnie and I will miss him greatly!!”

Bob echoed his thoughts in a statement to Fox News. “Ginnie and I lost a dear friend with Tim’s passing. He was one of the greatest, if not the greatest,” The Bob Newhart Show star said of his wife, Ginny Newhart. “I will always remember our regular Tuesday dinners together with Tim and Sharkey (Charlene), Dick and Dolly Martin, Don and Barbara Rickles, Mike and Marylou Connors, Eydie and Steve Lawrence and Ginnie and me,” he continued. “No one should be allowed to laugh that much! We will miss him greatly.”

Fans and friends alike were heartbroken to hear the news that McHale’s Navy star died earlier this week. Tim’s rep, Howard Bragman, confirmed that the actor sadly passed away in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday morning. In the time leading up to his death, the six-time Emmy Award-winning comedian suffered complications from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), but had no signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s, according to People.

Tim sadly leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Charlene Conway, as well as multiple children and grandkids. His death comes after The Private Eyes star’s wife was appointed as a conservator of her husband this past April, according to court documents obtained by Closer Weekly.

The situation was settled after Tim’s stepdaughter, Kelly Conway, allegedly asked to be appointed as the conservator last year, The Blast reported at the time. Although there was some back and forth, Charlene was ultimately found to be “suitable and qualified” by the court last month and Kelly consented to her appoint.
