Fans of This Beloved ’80s Sitcom Can Finally Start Counting Down to Its Return
‘A Different World’ sequel brings viewers the next chapter of the beloved HBCU Hillman College and debuts on Netflix on September 24.
Nearly 40 years after fans first fell in love with one beloved ’80s sitcom, viewers are finally getting a chance to return to the world they never forgot. Now, fans can officially start counting down to the long-awaited premiere of its sequel series on Netflix.
According to TV Line, a sequel to A Different World will debut on Netflix on September 24. It just so happens that the original series premiered on September 24, 1987.
A Different World became much more than a sitcom for many viewers. Some fans credit the series with inspiring them to attend college, particularly Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs).
A fan on Instagram shared that they loved the original series and are ready for the sequel. They explained that watching the original not only opened their eyes to attending an HCBU, but “This show made me want to attend college!!! Thank God for this show!!!”
In addition to announcing the September 24 premiere date, Netflix released the first trailer for the upcoming show.
The series will star Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, the daughter of Whitley and Dwayne. The first trailer quickly sparked excitement among longtime viewers who are eager to revisit Hillman College and reconnect with familiar faces.
“I just got a chill,” a fan on Instagram admitted.
“A Different World showing up on Netflix feels like the syllabus just got corrected decades late,” an excited fan commented on Instagram.
The humor, friendships, and romance that fans watched develop in the original made characters like Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne unforgettable.
Just like the original run of A Different World, the action will take place at the fictional HBCU Hillman College. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison, who played Whitley and Dwayne, will appear in the new series.
Viewers have hoped to see what happened to Whitley and Dwayne in the years after they left Hillman, and now they’ll find out. The show will also bring back characters such as Ron, Freddie, Jaleesa, and more. The combination of new and returning characters will give longtime fans a chance to revisit beloved characters as they all guide the next generation.
