More than 35 years after Family Ties ended, fans still turn on the sitcom when they need comfort, a laugh, or a reminder of simpler times. For many viewers, the Keatons still feel like family.
“This is the ideal family most of us wanted to be part of. Nice, kind, intelligent understanding parents who still knew how to parent, great siblings. The writing, acting, casting was all great,” someone on Reddit shared.
Family Ties aired from September 1982 to May 1989 and included both great comedic scenes and insightful storylines revolving around serious issues. Fans still point to the heartbreaking episode in which Alex struggles to cope after the death of a close friend, an episode that brought one of Michael J. Fox‘s most emotional performances of the series.
Viewers also still remember the surprisingly serious storyline featuring Tom Hanks as Elyse’s alcoholic brother, a role that tackled addiction in an unusually honest way for a sitcom.
The series certainly wasn’t entirely serious, though, and fans look back fondly on some of the biggest comedic storylines as well as the serious ones.
The time a kangaroo ended up in the Keaton family room is a fan favorite, as is the episode where Alex recruits Mallory to step in for a high school quiz show. The laughs viewers had then and have now in rewatching the series are genuine and bring great joy.

As streaming gives viewers endless choices, many fans say Family Ties remains one of the shows they return to when life feels stressful.
“I’ve been catching quite a few episodes and man. They were absolutely fantastic. Any kind of cheese or corn ball is strictly a product of the time and it’s infinitely rewatchable,” a Reddit user wrote.
“I was an 80s kid and rewatching now just brings a sense of comfort. I loved the sets, comfy/cozy living room and kitchen,” someone else noted.
Nearly four decades later, fans say Family Ties still offers something hard to find: warmth, humor and the comforting feeling of spending time with a family viewers never quite forgot.
