‘General Hospital’ Legend Genie Francis Finally Gets the Recognition Fans Have Waited Years For

A General Hospital legend is finally getting the honor she deserves. Genie Francis will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Daytime Emmys.

Francis made her soap debut on General Hospital in 1977 at the age of 14, playing the now-iconic Laura Sullivan/Vining/Webber/Baldwin/Spencer/Collins. While Laura was always a popular character, her wedding to Luke Spencer (played by Anthony Geary) catapulted both Francis and Laura to superstardom. The couple’s two-day 1981 nuptials drew a whopping 30 million viewers, making it the most-watched and highest-rated event in daytime soap history.

The actress opened up about her award, sharing in a statement, “I want to offer my deepest gratitude to the leadership of NATAS for honoring me with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.” She continued, “This February marks 50 years since I first portrayed Laura on General Hospital. Stepping onto that set at just 14, I could never have imagined the extraordinary journey that lay ahead.”

“I am deeply grateful to have been welcomed onto your television screens and into your homes for five decades; for the love, support and loyalty I’ve been given; and for the privilege of being a small part of your lives,” Francis added.

She went on to say, “Thank you to NATAS, my colleagues, the daytime community and, most of all, the viewers. My career in daytime television has truly been the adventure of a lifetime, and I am deeply honored by this recognition.”

Even though she’s best known as General Hospital’s Laura, Francis has also starred on other soaps, including Days of Our Lives, All My Children, and The Young and the Restless.

On Thursday, General Hospital announced the actress’s Daytime Emmy on Instagram, writing, “Please help us congratulate Genie Francis on receiving this year’s Lifetime Achievement Honor from the #DaytimeEmmys!” And that’s exactly what fans did.

“Congratulations! So well deserved for representing all the nuances of a lifetime of a character and taking us all on the emotional journey,” wrote one GH fan. Others added, “Long overdue. Genie is the best actress ever in daytime and nighttime. A massive talent”, “Anyone who has been watching her all these years knows why,” and “The GOAT of daytime drama deserves this and more.”
