Jeff Probst Reveals a Shocking Twist Ahead of the ‘Survivor’ Season 51 Premiere
With Survivor officially in its “Open Era,” Season 51 is set to premiere on September 23. But before the first new episode drops, host and showrunner Jeff Probst is revealing a kind of jaw-dropping twist.
Probst recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, sharing some key news about how this season’s coin flip and cash pot will work. And as it turns out, one Season 51 player could give a million-dollar gift to someone in Season 52.
“We took an idea from 50, this idea of a million-dollar coin flip. We said, ‘What if we put that in the show every season? And every season one player gets to flip a coin, and if you call it correctly, we’ll add a million dollars to the pot for that season,” said Probst. Sounds kind of familiar. So what’s the twist?
The Survivor host continued, “Same rules as 50 with one difference. If you call it incorrectly, you as the coin flipper are out, that million dollars rolls into the next season of Survivor. So in Survivor 51, at some point, a player’s going to flip a coin for a million dollars. If they land it, the prize pool will be $2 million for 51. If they don’t land it, that million dollars will go into Survivor 52 and somebody will flip a $2 million coin, making the prize money $3 million.”
While it isn’t the only twist viewers will see in Season 51, Probst called the change “the most innovative twist in prize money in the history of unscripted television.” He went on to explain his reasoning, adding, “Because that million dollars is a living, breathing thing. And the question is, where is it going to land and how many of them will there be when it does land?”
If you’re wondering what exactly Survivor’s Open Era is, Probst has an answer. He told Entertainment Weekly, “Every type of advantage, every twist we’ve ever done is in play” — hence the name “open.”
Probst shared that while the producers have always had the freedom to bring anything back into play, each new “era” had its own patterns and, “With the Open Era, we’re deliberately breaking those patterns. We’re building each season on its own, using ingredients from all 50 seasons.”
Survivor Season 51 premieres on Wednesday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streams live on Paramount+.
