Jennifer Grey Receives Outpouring of Support After Sharing Heartbreaking Family News
Jennifer Grey mourns her mother, Jo Wilder, who passed away at 94 following a lung cancer diagnosis just one week prior.
Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey is mourning the loss of her mother, Jo Wilder, who died at age 94 just one week after learning she had lung cancer. In a heartfelt tribute, Grey revealed that her mother “chose grace over fear” as she decided to face the end of her life on her own terms.
Grey’s July 7 Instagram post announcing Wilder’s death included a handful of iconic photos of her mother, several of which included the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off alum. In the caption of her post, Grey wrote that her mother “was brave and deep.”
“My mother, Jo Wilder, passed away on July 4th at 94 — by her own choosing, on her own terms, exactly as she lived,” Grey shared.
She continued, “A week earlier, she learned she had lung cancer. True to who she was, she chose grace over fear, understanding that leaving this world with dignity is an honor, not a tragedy.”
Before becoming a mother, Wilder had aspirations to be an actress, working in theater in New York, Grey explained. While raising Grey and her brother, Wilder pursued passions including becoming “a lifelong activist, fiercely attuned to right and wrong.”
The comment section of Grey’s post was flooded with notes of love.
Tracy Pollan, wife of Michael J. Fox and Family Ties alum, wrote, “What a moving tribute. I am thinking of you and the radiant Jo Wilder today. I feel so blessed to have had your beautiful mother in my life.”
Pollan added, “I will cherish my memories of her warmth, love, and guidance. So heartbroken she is gone, but grateful she left us with the dignity she lived with.”
Fellow entertainers, including Lea Thompson, Katie Couric, and Holly Robinson Peete, also shared messages of support and love.
“She would be so immensely proud of you. Sending you comfort in this time of sorrow,” a fan wrote.
