Marie Osmond Reveals How She Used ‘Atonement’ to Heal After Son Michael’s Death Nearly 10 Years Ago
Singer Marie Osmond is still mourning the loss of her son Michael Osmond, who died by suicide at the age of 19 in 2020. Taking to Instagram, she recalled a quote that helped her get through that tough time in her life.
It read: “Your wound is probably not your fault, but your healing is your responsibility.”
In the caption, Marie, 60, explained why those words meant so much to her. “This quote intrigued me because I know a lot of people, including myself, that have been wounded, but also have come to realize that recovery is our responsibility,” she said on Sunday, February 23. “Someone told me that our hardest times produce our greatest power and our greatest strength comes from our weakest moments. My life has taught me that our wounds can empower us if we look to the atonement of Jesus Christ.”

Thanks to her faith, the “Paper Roses” singer learned a lot about healing. “In a few days, it will be 10 years since my angel son Michael passed away which left me with indescribable pain,” she said. “I needed the comfort only the Lord could provide and until this trial, I didn’t realize the true power of the atonement. That is when it took on an even greater meaning to me and became an integral part of my healing.”
“It was through the atonement I was able to see I could either give power to what was paralyzing me in my grief, or I could allow that pain to build me into the person God knew I could be,” the Talk cohost added.
Marie chose the latter. “I know we have all been hurt by something in this world because hard times finds us all. Maybe a betrayal, illness, loss of a job, financial burdens or being hurt by a very close friend,” she explained. “But how we respond is OUR choice!”
Now, the “Raining Tears” musician can go through life helping people with their problems. “As my mother would say … ‘We spend the last half of our lives fixing what the first half did to us!'” she said. What an even better quote!
