It’s been a long time since actress Nicole Kidman has spoken out about her two adopted kids, Isabella and Connor, with her ex-husband, Tom Cruise. But in a new rare interview, she made an unexpected statement about her reported estranged children.

“They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions,” she told WHO magazine on Thursday, Nov. 8. It’s been said that they aren’t close due to their connection to the Church of Scientology. “They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here.”

Nicole welcomed Isabella, 25, and Connor, 23, during her 11-year marriage with Tom, which lasted from 1990 until 2001. The actress revealed why she’s “very private” when it comes to her adult kids. “I have to protect all those relationships,” she said. “I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

Nicole remarried to Keith Urban in 2006 and they are parents to two daughters, Sunday, 10, and Faith, 7. Nicole has made headlines in the past for making award acceptances speeches and mentioning her girls with Keith, but not Isabella and Connor.

But despite all the rumors and drama, Nicole has said that her motivation to be successful has always been her kids. “I think everything is motivated by wanting to take care of your children and carve a path for them and leave them with a sense of morality, dignity, and accountability,” the Oscar winning-actress told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet of the 2018 Hollywood Film Awards on Nov. 4.

In 2014, she gushed further about how important motherhood is to her. “Whether you’re an adoptive mother, a foster mother, or a biological mother,” Nicole gushed to Magic FM, “it’s the emotion of attaching to a child and helping guide them [that’s important].”
