Retired actor Dennis Franz looked nearly unrecognizable in a recent outing.

The NYPD Blue alum, 81, was spotted out in Montecito, California, last week, with his longtime wife Joanie Zeck.

In new photos obtained by the Daily Mail, Franz — who is best known for playing Detective Andy Sipowicz on the ABC television series — appeared casual, wearing a blue T-shirt, which he paired with a red, plaid button-down and gray cargo shorts. He completed the fit with blue Sperry-style sneakers.

The Die Hard 2 actor accessorized the look with a gold chain and wristwatch, and appears to be sporting a longer, shaggier ‘do these days, tying his now-white locks in a low ponytail.

As for Zeck, 78, to whom Franz has been married for over three decades, she opted to match her beau for the lunch date, wearing a colorful button-down shirt with a red and blue plaid pattern, wearing her auburn hair down and blow-dried for the occasion. Zeck finished her look off with black pants, matching Franz again with a pair of blue sneakers.

The rare sighting comes two decades after Franz stepped back from Hollywood following his 12-year run on NYPD Blue, and marks his first since 2023, following the passing of Austin Majors, his onscreen son in the show, who died at the age of 27.

NYPD Blue ran until 2005, with Franz, David Caruso, Amy Brenneman, James McDaniel, Sherry Stringfield and Nicholas Turturro leading the pack in season 1.

In addition to the beloved cop drama, Franz appeared in Hill Street Blues, which ran from 1981 to 1987. He also starred in films including 1978’s The Fury, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Body Double and 1996’s American Buffalo, alongside Dustin Hoffman.

Not much is known about Franz’s post-acting life, with him and Zeck reportedly enjoying life in the Santa Barbara-adjacent town. According to the Robb Report, however, the pair have been trying to sell their mansion in the area, which, as of April 2025, was on the market for $18 million.
