‘The Breakfast Club’ Rebel Judd Nelson Is 66, Never Married and Living Far From the Spotlight

More than 40 years ago, the iconic ’80s movie The Breakfast Club hit theaters. The John Hughes movie had a cast of up-and-coming Hollywood stars, most of whom have since all gone on to become huge names in the industry. Some, like Judd Nelson, have continued acting but also quietly stepped back from the spotlight for the most part.

When Nelson landed the part of John Bender in The Breakfast Club, he was relatively unknown. According to his IMDb page, he had only done a couple of projects before the Hughes classic hit theaters.

Once he played the film’s moody bad boy, however, Nelson’s career took off. The movie also launched the ’80s “Brat Pack,” which included ’80s stars such as Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Demi Moore, and Ally Sheedy.

Nelson never stopped acting entirely, as he has over 130 gigs listed on his IMDb page. Recent projects from the past few years include roles in You Are Here, Empire, Two and a Half Men, and Nelson also had a lengthy run playing Jack Richmond in the Brooke Shields ’90s television series Suddenly Susan.

In July 2019, Nelson talked about how his role in The Breakfast Club has stuck with him even decades later. He explained to Pop Horror, “Hey, I feel lucky to have been on such a fast horse. You always hope a film will have relevance afterwards, years later. That film certainly does,” Nelson shared.

He praised Hughes, noting that Hughes was “really the first guy to make movies about young people without implying that they’re less…He’s one of the first guys to remember that high school is [a] serious time for a lot of people.”

“I’m very lucky to have been involved in that project, because, years later, it’s still a film that people see and enjoy,” Nelson added.

During a 2019 interview with the StarNews Online, Nelson noted that growing up, “In the family I was from, you learn how to deal with adversity more than you learn to deal with success.” As a result, he added, “So, when you have success, it’s kind of disorienting…You just try to keep yourself out of trouble. It’s hard, but you try your best.” He seems to have been quite successful on that front.

Nelson has always kept his private life very private, never marrying or having children. He reunited with some of his Breakfast Club co-stars in 2025, ABC News shared, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie, and fans were thrilled to see the entertainers together again.

More recently, as Daily Mail noted, Nelson was recently spotted riding a motorcycle in West Hollywood, looking unrecognizable. He has managed to live a quiet life on his own terms, working steadily while also maintaining a fair amount of privacy in his everyday life.
