There’s a Powerful Reason Why Celebs Are Wearing Pins to the 2018 Golden Globes

Black is the new black, at least at the 2018 Golden Globes, where many attendees are wearing the color in solidarity against sexual harassment and assault. But we’ll also see another trend on this year’s red carpet: Many attendees donning a pin bearing the words “Time’s Up.”

The pin raises awareness for the Time’s Up crusade, a sexual harassment prevention initiative founded on Jan. 1 by 300 actresses and female executives, agents, producers, writers, and directors — including A-listers like Eva Longoria, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington, Shonda Rhimes, and Reese Witherspoon. In fact, it was Reese who approached stylist and costume designer Arianne Phillips — known for her work on the Kingsman films and Madonna’s concert tours — about designing a pin at a Time’s Up meeting in December.

“Reese asked me to come to the actors’ group, and told me they were going to be wearing black and would I consider creating a pin,” Arianne told The Hollywood Reporter. “We were up against the holidays, but I said I could do it, and the first person I called was my partner-in-crime, [LA jewelry designer] Michael Schmidt.”

Arianne and Michael joined other creative types to design the Time’s Up logo, and once they had it ready, they manufactured 500 of them in a two-week span. “I met so many great women, and it was such an honor to be called to action,” she said of the experience.

Now, the 54-year-old Oscar nominee is hoping her colleagues in fashion will donate to the cause. “I can’t think of anything more appropriate than fashion brands who have built careers on the red carpet donating to the Time’s Up legal fund, because as we’ve learned in the last year, there’s nothing more powerful than how we spend our money,” she said. “I will take notice of these brands and want to do business with them.”

Meanwhile, at tonight’s Golden Globes, the pins Arianne helped create will send a clear message. In fact, with 500 pins in circulation, that message will be impossible to ignore.
