Barbra Streisand’s Oscars tribute to late actor Robert Redford didn’t just irk Jane Fonda — it also seems to have touched a major nerve with her husband of 27 years, James Brolin.
“Everyone knows she never totally got over Robert, which is why this bothers James so much,” a source tells Closer of the former The Way We Were costars. “He doesn’t want to play second fiddle to anyone, even the late, great Robert Redford. And he shouldn’t have to. It’s so disrespectful.”
According to director Sydney Pollack, Streisand, now 83, developed a “crush” on a then-married Redford before they’d even begun filming the 1973 romantic drama — and while their relationship never crossed any lines, the two remained close friends until his death in 2025.
“Barbra doesn’t see anything wrong with talking about her past and if James complains, she just tells him that he’s overreacting and brushes it off,” reveals the source, “which only adds to his frustration.”

Streisand has taken quite a few strolls down memory lane as of late.
“Jame has been incredibly patient over the years, but he’s finding it more and more difficult to cope with Barbra’s obsession with her past lovers,” the source admits. “She totally romanticizes them and always seems to find a way to bring up her exes.”
There’s only so much the 85-year-old actor can take, though, notes the source.
“It’s not that he doubts her commitment, it’s that he doesn’t understand why she keeps going back there when they’ve built a life together,” the source explains. “It’s become a real sticking point between them.”
