Maurice Benard Can’t Stop Talking About Sonny’s Latest ‘General Hospital’ Story — and What Comes Next
Sonny Corinthos struggles to leave the mob on ‘General Hospital’ as Maurice Benard teases exciting storylines and major twists ahead.
General Hospital’s Sonny Corinthos is learning that it’s hard to leave the mob after a lifetime of crime. For Maurice Benard‘s entire run on the soap, Sonny has been a mobster. Suddenly, all that changed this past summer when Sonny announced his intentions to leave the mob and go legit. His family and friends couldn’t believe it … and now they believe it even less.
When Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner) and Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) were attacked in Pentonville prison, one of the culprits claimed Sonny was responsible, but Sonny insisted he had been set up. The audience has since learned that Drew (Cameron Mathison) and Ava (Maura West) set the attack in motion to frame Sonny, but nobody believes him. It’s a tough position for the character to be in, but one that Benard appears to be enjoying.
Benard has never shied away from interacting with fans on social media. As Sonny’s story came into focus over the last few days, Benard has been replying to fans and offering his own thoughts on X, while also hinting at what’s to come.
Benard was ready for the storyline to get off to a roaring start last week, just prior to the episode in which the attack took place.
“LET THE GAMES BEGIN,” Benard tweeted in all caps, while tagging GH. He repeated the same thing just after the episode aired in which Sonny denied all wrongdoing to Jason and Ric.
Right after the attack aired, one fan knew what was coming down the pike for Sonny as the accusations piled up and wasn’t sure she could bear watching. However, Benard was fine with whatever comes Sonny’s way due to what he gets to play.
“I can take the backlash if it comes with exciting scenes,” he wrote.
When another fan voiced their frustration with how Sonny would be treated, Benard urged the audience to watch and see.
“Listen, I feel you, but you gotta let the story play out. It’s really interesting, and it gives everybody a lot to play. I’m having a blast,” he said.
One character who has yet to tell Sonny if she trusts him is his secret girlfriend, assistant district attorney Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor). When a fan asked if Justine would put her faith in Sonny, Benard could only reply with this tease: “A lot goes on in the next couple of months.”
