Prince William and Princess Kate seem to be in shock that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have moved back to the United Kingdom.

A source told Vanity Fair in an article published Friday, August 28, that “this was meant to be a happy time for” the Prince of Wales, 44, given that his wife, 44 — who announced last year that she is in remission from cancer — is “doing well” and their son Prince George “is just about to start Eton.”

However, the source added, “This has just derailed them.”

Now that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have officially arrived back in Britain, the source said, “There’s a sense that William is going to have to be watching over his shoulder the whole time. He doesn’t know what his brother is going to spring on them all next.”

Meghan, 45, and Harry, 41, shocked the world when it was revealed that they would be relocating from their home in California back to the United Kingdom. People reported earlier this week that they’ve already begun settling back into life in England.

Two sources with knowledge told Vanity Fair that their children — son Prince Archie, 7, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 5 — will start at a prep school in the Cotswolds next week.

According to the magazine, William and his father, King Charles III, have spoken “one-on-one” about the Sussexes’ return and are “on the same page” that the couple will not take on royal duties.

“Prince William is very concerned about the Sussexes coming back and why they have made the decision so quickly,” said Vanity Fair‘s first source.

“He is adamant the situation must remain as it is and that Harry and Meghan will not carry out royal engagements,” the source added. “He has sought his father’s assurance there will be no changes to the present situation.”

A rep for Harry and Meghan said the couple has no plans to resume royal duties.

As for the king, 77, he’s “genuinely happy that Harry is back, because it means they will see more of him and the children,” the source said.

However, they added, “I do know that he is dreading the prospect of Harry resurrecting his battle with the Home Office over security and the sense that the Harry-and-Meghan soap opera is about to start all over again.”

According to People, the Spare author and the Suits alum will still keep their home in Montecito, California, and their vacation property in Portugal.
