Late-night comedian John Oliver is making the soap opera rounds this summer on two different daytime favorites. This week, he will make an appearance on General Hospitalin a mystery role that could have enormous consequences for all of Port Charles. In August, Oliver will swing over to Days of our Lives and Salem and share scenes with the town’s most prolific bad boy, EJ DiMera.
Last Week Tonight Heads to Days of our Lives
“I am happy to say that I’ve already taped a week of episodes on Days of Our Lives, which is clearly a huge honor,” Oliver said on the June 28 episode of his late-night talk show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, per Variety. “It’s been home to some of the most renowned soap opera actors, like Deidre Hall, Susan Seaforth Hayes and John Aniston,” he said, adding, “It’s also featured guest appearances from legends like Dick Van Dyke, Betty White and now me.”
Oliver’s appearance is a result of a March plea to have fun on a soap playing a character with the following criteria: “I wanted to play a character with a ridiculous name, I wanted a juicy storyline like murder or slapping and I wanted a dramatic close-up of my face.”
The comedian’s characters on both soaps remain under wraps, but DAYS star Daniel Feuerriegel has offered a little preview on what’s ahead next month.
“Well, this happened,” he wrote in an Instagram post featuring a photo of him and Oliver. “Can’t wait for y’all to enjoy the shenanigans. John crushes it.”
In the snap, the two performers appear to be in EJ’s bedroom, with EJ wearing his pajamas. Could EJ have some sort of dream in which Oliver’s character appears? With the soap taping nearly a year in advance and Oliver taping his scenes in June to air this August, these scenes will clearly be inserted into shows that were in the can months ago.
While we are not sure exactly what to expect from Oliver’s scenes with EJ, it’s a pretty good bet they will include some laughs.
