All in the Family premiered more than 50 years ago, but fans still talk about how extraordinary the show was for the times.
The series regularly touched on difficult topics generally considered taboo by other ’70s television shows, especially sitcoms. Some of those episodes, such as “Edith’s 50th Birthday,” are still discussed among fans and have left a truly lasting impact.
“Edith’s 50th Birthday” tackled what was, at the time, considered off-limits for a sitcom: sexual assault. The storyline shattered myths about crimes of this nature by showing what could happen to Edith (Jean Stapleton), who was simply in her own home at the time of the attempted assault.

In a discussion about that particular All in the Family episode on Reddit, one fan wrote, “Jean did an excellent job in this episode, and for once Edith wasn’t just a hero, but her own hero, too.”
That same Reddit user continued, “I also won’t forget how the audience reacted, I mean they were rooting for her, like they were rooting for their favorite football team. It was mind blowing!”
Another shared, “All in the Family never shied away from the tough issues. That show taught me more about the world than my middle school civics class.”
“I remember seeing it when [it] first aired. I was shaken by it being particularly in a show which was funny most of the time. Really stuck with me. Showed Archie (Carroll O’Connor) in a different light as well,” someone else commented.
One Reddit user noted they had seen the episode both when it initially aired, when they were a kid, and again more recently.
In that recent viewing, they admitted it was only after Edith ran out the front door that they realized they had been holding their breath. The Redditor added, “and I’m a dude!”
“I recall this from watching as a kid. I was horrified. But that show did what that show did best. It turned a mirror into real every day life good or bad,” read an additional viewer’s response.
Despite the incredibly difficult topic, “Edith’s 50th Birthday” gave All in the Family viewers an experience they still talk about now, nearly 50 years later. The emotional storyline sparked a national discussion about sexual assault that has stuck with people and changed the preconceived notions some people had on the topic.
