Donnie Wahlberg Not Willing to Take a ‘Pay Cut’ for Tom Selleck to Appear on ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff

Despite his ongoing complaints about the cancellation of Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck could still appear on sequel series Boston Blue, says a source — but his possible return is creating an awkward situation with Donnie Wahlberg.

“The baton has already been passed to Donnie,” explains the source. “Donnie loves leading the spinoff on his own.”

For 14 seasons, Selleck, 81, played NYPD commissioner Frank Reagan while Wahlberg, 57, portrayed his detective son, Danny Reagan.

When Boston Blue premiered in October 2025 — 10 months after Blue Bloods was taken off the air — Danny became the main character.

“There absolutely is a path for Tom to get back into the Blue Bloods universe,” insists the source. “But it’s going to take some financial concessions on the part of both him and Donnie — and that just hasn’t happened yet. Neither of these guys are going to take another pay cut just to be on the same TV show again!”

During the Wednesday, July 29, episode of Ted Danson‘s podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, the Magnum P.I. icon revealed the Blue Bloods cast had “taken a 25 percent cut in salary” to “keep the show going” at its end.

Though Woman’s World reports Wahlberg earned around $125,000 per episode of the original series following the pay decrease, the amount he’s banking for the spinoff remains unknown.

“Donnie’s making a fortune by network TV standards,” Closer‘s source assures. “Tom still expects to get paid, too — and to be fair, a lot of the early success of Blue Bloods came down to him.
