Kelly Ripa Jokes About the ‘Fun’ of Getting a Mammogram at the Doctor’s Office: ‘Why Am I a Woman?’
Being a woman isn’t easy — just ask Kelly Ripa! On the September 24 episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan, she detailed a process that she hates getting done every year: a mammogram. Kelly explained that she hates going to the doctor’s office to get one because the experience is so uncomfortable.
“You don’t know the fun of a mammogram until you’ve gone with me,” she told her cohost Ryan Seacrest. “Because, you know, what really are they going to put in that vice?”
Kelly then used Ryan’s chest as an example to demonstrate what her doctor does to her body. “They would have an easier time with you than with me,” she said, clutching the American Idol host’s pecs. “Trust me. They’ve got more to work with here than with what I have.”
According to cancer.gov, a mammogram is an “x-ray picture of the breast” that can be used to check for any signs of breast cancer. Even though Kelly knows that she has to get one to stay healthy, she further explained why she doesn’t enjoy the experience at all.
“I go, ‘I don’t know what you’re going to put in there’” she told the audience about what happened to her when she went to her doctor’s office. “And she goes, ‘Don’t worry about it.'”
However, Kelly did worry. Once it was time for her doctor to check her breasts, she felt like it was time to run for the hills. “She literally looks at me, like, ‘I’ll take skin from your neck and your back if I have to,'” Kelly jokingly recalled. “There’s not so much for them to work with so, literally, my face is smashed in the glass. And then she goes, ‘And hold your breath. And breathe. And hold your breath again.’ And I’m like, ‘Why am I a woman?’” So funny!
Kelly even told Ryan that he should come with her to watch the whole procedure so he knows just how uncomfortable it really is. “I should actually force you as some sort of punishment to come,” she joked again. “One day when you do something bad, I’m going to make you come to my mammogram.”
