Melissa Gilbert is celebrating a treasured friendship she never expected. More than 40 years after Little House on the Prairie ended, Gilbert is calling one of her former co-stars “a true beauty” and a “forever sister.”
Melissa Sue Anderson played Mary Ingalls, the older sister to Laura, but both women admitted over the years that they weren’t especially close. That, however, has changed in recent months. In a new social media post, Gilbert gushed over Anderson in a way that had fans swooning.
On July 23, Gilbert took to Instagram and shared a screenshot of an article about Anderson. In the caption, Gilbert noted that she keeps a pretty close tab on media articles that mention the show or its stars. In this case, the article was about Anderson and how she is “still stunning today.”
Gilbert noted that sometimes the articles she comes across are cruel or filled with lies. In this case, however, “This headline is the absolute truth. Melissa is a true beauty,” she raved.
She continued, “It’s not just the outside of her, it’s what’s inside that makes her shine even more.”
Anderson has been a “true confidante” to Gilbert, checking in on her to ensure she’s doing okay. “I’m so glad that we have had the chance to reconnect and become real friends,” she admitted.
Although the actresses have long acknowledged they weren’t close while filming Little House on the Prairie, Gilbert revealed in late 2025 that they had quietly reconnected through long conversations and shared memories. Her latest post suggests that the friendship has only grown stronger.

In a March 2010 interview with The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Anderson noted that she and Gilbert were “very, very different.” She admitted, “I honestly do not have a lot of memories of the two of us.”
Luckily, over time, that has changed significantly.
In her new Instagram post, Gilbert shared, “I’m so glad that we have had the chance to reconnect and become real friends…we will forever be sisters.”
Many fans of the women and of Little House on the Prairie commented on Gilbert’s post, gushing that their hearts were full to see the sweet tribute to Anderson.
After decades of not having a close relationship, Gilbert and Anderson have worked through it all. Now, Gilbert wrote, they are “Fully able to appreciate our forever connection.”
