Michelle Obama is getting candid about a very difficult time in her life. In a new interview with GMA‘s Robin Roberts, the former First Lady revealed she suffered a miscarriage, an unfortunate experience that left her feeling “lost and alone,” about 20 years ago.

“I felt like I failed because I didn’t know how common miscarriages were because we don’t talk about them,” Michelle, 54, shared with the morning TV program. “We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken.” She continued, “That’s one of the reasons why I think it’s important to talk to young mothers about the fact that miscarriages happen.”

Michelle — who is now a mom to two daughters, Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17, with her husband, Barack Obama — then opened up about how they had to turn to IVF to conceive their girls. At the time, she was worried about being able to get pregnant naturally because of her age. “The biological clock is real… egg production is limited. I realized that as I was 34 and 35,” she shared of that time. “We had to do IVF.”

She also noted that she decided to speak out on these topics in an effort to help and inspire other women. “I think it’s the worst thing that we do to each other as women, not share the truth about our bodies and how they work,” Michelle confessed.

And if she wasn’t already relatable enough during the sit-down, the mom-of-two then opened up about how the stressful times in her marriage to Barack led them to counseling. “Marriage counseling for us was one of those ways where we learned how to talk out our differences,” Michelle shared. “I know too many young couples who struggle and think that somehow there’s something wrong with them. And I want them to know that Michelle and Barack Obama, who have a phenomenal marriage and who love each other, we work on our marriage. And we get help with our marriage when we need it.” Talk about relationship goals!
