Nearly seven years after Mindhunter aired its last episode, fans still consider it to be one of the best shows Netflix ever created. Viewers have never stopped asking for the series to return, and now, lingering comments from one of the show’s stars are once again fueling hope that the story might not be over after all.
Mindhunter only aired 19 episodes across two seasons between 2017 and 2019 before it was put on hold. Netflix never seemed to officially cancel the series, but the streaming service has also never announced its return. In almost any fan-created list of television shows that people want to see return, Mindhunter is mentioned.
A current thread among television viewers on X, formerly Twitter, provides an example of this. One X user challenged everybody to “Name a canceled TV show that deserves another season.” It did not take long for Mindhunterto be suggestedmore than once.
“Mindhunter. Season 2 ended with that BTK cold open and then Netflix just stopped,” one tweet read.
Someone else responded, “This is the only correct answer, incredible show.”
Although it might seem a stretch for the series to return with a third season now, so many years after Season 2, it seems the door to the possibility remains at least slightly cracked open.
In June 2025, Mindhunter star Holt McCallany told ScreenRant that he had met with David Fincher several months earlier. McCallany relayed, “He said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance.”

He noted that Fincher would need to be happy with the scripts if the movies were to happen, which is no small order. Fincher’s displeasure with Season 2 Mindhunter scripts was believed to be a big reason the series didn’t continue.
McCallany added, “I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would have to align.”
Both Fincher and McCallany continue to work with Netflix, so the relationship is still there. That certainly doesn’t mean it’d be a slam dunk to get the show back again, though.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that any substantial progress has been made on reviving the series since McCallany shared what he did a year ago.
Many fans online still insist that Mindhunter was “one of the best true crime series ever made.” One fan on Reddit noted, “I want S3 just as much as the next person, but I want it to be done right and so does Fincher.”
Budget cuts were also said to play a role in Fincher’s resistance to continuing the series.
Despite how passionate fans are about seeing Mindhunter return, many seem to agree that if Netflix isn’t willing to provide an adequate budget to do it properly, it shouldn’t be done at all.
It appears that eager Mindhunter viewers will remain in limbo for now, keeping hope alive while hints of a return swirl.
