Less than a month after the debut of the new Netflix science-fiction series The Boroughs, the streaming service has canceled it. The show, starring the likes of Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, and Alfre Woodard, was executive-produced by the Stranger Things team of the Duffer Brothers.

The Boroughs debuted on Netflix on May 21. The full eight episodes of the first season dropped at once, and those behind the show suggested they had a three-season storyline arc in mind.

According to Variety, writers had already started working on Season 2 before news of the cancellation emerged.

Just after the debut of The Boroughs, Molina told Variety he hoped there would be a second season.

The finale of Season 1 definitely left the door open to more chaos and mystery emerging from the retirement community that was not nearly as welcoming as it appeared.

“I would love to carry this on,” Molina told the media outlet. “I would love for this to be ongoing…We’ve got a wonderful cast. We’ve got a great premise. The sets are all there. I’d love to do more.”

Viewers took to the Netflix subreddit upon learning of the cancellation, and people didn’t necessarily seem entirely surprised or heartbroken.

One person commented, “I loved the show but didn’t feel like a story worth telling came after the first season. It was good as is!”

“It was slightly better than most of Netflix’s extremely mediocre content, but not a show I’d be on the edge of my seat for another season. Wasted acting talent in that one,” wrote another.

“Dang they set it up to continue and I would have watched,” someone else admitted.

Before the cancellation was announced, another Reddit user shared, “I really liked it for a single season binge. Interesting premise, legendary actors. I don’t think it needs to be a multi-season show.”

While most seemed to think it seemed fitting to keep The Boroughs to one season, some viewers on Reddit suggested storyline possibilities for further seasons. In response to one idea, a viewer wrote, “I’d watch that too! I just finished and want more.”
