Nearly 50 years after Donny and Marie aired its final episode, fans still say the wholesome variety show reminds them of a gentler era of television, one where families gathered together each week to watch.

Premiering in 1976, Donny and Marie quickly became one of television’s most recognizable variety shows. Viewers tuned in to see Donny Osmond and his younger sister, Marie Osmond, star in comedy sketches, celebrity guests, and musical numbers. The light-hearted, wholesome series filled with playful sibling banter became a weekly ritual for many families.

“I loved it, watched it weekly and cried at the end when they sang the closing song. I was very much amazed at how their family togetherness and loved seeing that,” wrote a fan on Reddit.

On a Facebook post shared by Marie several years ago, a supporter wistfully noted, “Thanks for the memories. Wish there were more entertainment shows on in todays world for our young people to benefit from.”

Even now, almost five decades later, fans can still quote lines from some of the show’s iconic songs. Donny and Marie often sang “I’m a Little Bit Country, I’m a Little Bit Rock and Roll,” which viewers loved.

The phrase became closely associated with the pair and reflected the show’s appeal. Marie’s country style blended with Donny’s pop vibe in a way that fans found quite charming.
