Peter Alexander Officially Joins ‘Today’ As Weekend Co-Anchor

There’s a new face on Today! On Saturday, Oct. 27, it was revealed that Peter Alexander will officially be joining the talk show on weekends as a co-anchor alongside Sheinelle Jones and Dylan Dreyer.

“We are so excited to announce that Peter is officially joining the Saturday Today team. Congratulations,” Sheinelle revealed on Weekend Today.

Following the announcement, Peter expressed how excited he is about the new role. “I’ve been watching this show since I was a kid and I am so honored, I’m so grateful to share this set with you guys,” the 42-year-old — who has been a part of NBC for 15 years — shared on air. “I’ve learned so much from so many people in this system.”

Peter even got the stamp of approval from two of the series’ biggest faces: Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie. “There is no one better or more qualified to be sitting in this very Today show seat,” Savannah shared. Her co-anchor, Hoda, added, “We have been cheering you on, Peter, from the beginning. It’s going to be so cool to see you on Saturday mornings when we all get up at seven to watch you.”

He first joined NBC News in 2004 and has been known for his international coverage including Iraq’s 2005 election and Osama bin Laden’s death. On top of that, he’s been the White House correspondent since 2012 and will continue that role during the week while flying back to NYC to be on Today every Saturday.

However, the transition won’t be too difficult considering Peter has been filling in for former co-anchor Craig Melvin, who left the show in August to focus on his weekday coverage instead. Craig even sent his well wishes to Peter. “It’s a great team in front of the camera, behind the camera. Congrats, buddy. Congrats, congrats,” he shared.

Peter’s official hiring comes amid all the drama with Megyn Kelly and her weekday 9 a.m. show, Megyn Kelly Today, following her racist comments. Late last week, the network confirmed she’s on her way out. We’re curious to see how everything unfolds for NBC and Today with all these staffing changes!
